What is INDECT?

INDECT stands for “INtelligent information system supporting observation, searching and DEteCTion for security of citizens in urban environment”. It is a research project of the European Union launched in 2009 and planned to be finished in 2013.

INDECT is the most extensive surveillance project ever planned or established. It is not limited to monitoring the internet. People on the street won’t escape INDECT either. What sounds like weird science fiction could become disturbing reality as soon as 2013. Science fiction was yesterday. INDECT will be tomorrow. INDECT combines all data from forums, social networks (e.g. Facebook) and internet search engines with government databases, communication data and feeds from street surveillance cameras. INDECT will know where we are, what we do, why we do it and what we are going to do next. INDECT will know our friends and our place of work. INDECT will judge whether we are behaving normally or irregularly.

Anonymous punishes Hungarian neo-Nazis; hacks, defaces websites

(examiner.com) In a successful and well coordinated effort, 17 neo-Nazi websites based in Hungary were hacked and defaced by the international Internet hacktivist collective known as Anonymous.

The action, taken Monday, June 18, is part of Operation Blitzkrieg (#OpBlitzkrieg). (…)

ETA ANNOUNCES CESSATION OF ARMED ACTIVITY

he Basque separatist paramilitary organisation, ETA, has announced what it calls “a definitive cessation of armed activity.” In a videotaped message passed on by third parties to BBC News, leaders of the outlawed organisation, which has been responsible for the killing of more than 800 people, say “dialogue and agreement must characterise the new age.”

The words “definitive cessation of armed activity” in the ETA statement are seen as crucial. International mediators have urged their inclusion to signal something much more than a ceasefire. ETA has promised and broken ceasefires in the past.

ETA was formed more than fifty years ago, during the dictatorship of General Franco, to demand the establishment of a Basque state separate from the rest of Spain.

A huge bomb in 1973 killed Spain’s Prime Minister Luis Carrero Blanco in Madrid.

1980 was ETA’s bloodiest year. The group killed nearly 100 people.

Over the last decade ETA has been squeezed by the arrests of many of its leaders and falling support.

Secret mediation has been taking place in recent years to try to replicate some of the successes of the Northern Ireland Peace process. A number of key players involved in that process, including Gerry Adams and Tony Blair, have played a part.

Speaking to BBC News, Tony Blair said “This is obviously a very big moment. This has been the last armed conflict in Europe. It has been going on for half a century and many people have lost their lives. A definitive end to violence is the absolute pre-requisite, it’s what we’ve been urging upon the parties. This is great news if people actually can put this conflict behind them and get on with trying to build a fair and just society in peace and harmony.”

Meshnet: Creating the New Internet

(thebitcointrader.com) As the SOPA debate rages on in Congress, the brightest minds of the Internet are already taking decisive steps toward building a new, alternative Internet which would remain untouchable by the corporations currently threatening to tear apart the fabric and soul of the Internet we know and love. For more on SOPA and the threat it represents, have a read of one of my older articles, here.

This new, decentralized (sound familiar?) Internet would not rely on corporate-controlled Internet Service Providers or be subject to the whims of increasingly undemocratic US government regulation, but would depend on its worldwide userbase for maintaining its infrastructure.

The key to the implementation of the so-called “Meshnet” is the establishment of a sufficiently powerful network of nodes. While a completely voluntary system would be ideal, the costs associated with the construction and operation of these nodes would be non-trivial; an incentivized system would be far more effective.
